Beyond the 90 Days

Beyond the 90 Days

I really hate truck ads. “No payments for 90 days!” Enticing interest rates for six and seven year loans laid out in months to look deceivingly attractive.

Most people look at a $50,000 truck and think about the payment. But the payment is only the beginning. Once you factor in insurance, gas, and maintenance, that “$650 truck” can easily become a $1,200–$1,500 monthly lifestyle. Over six or seven years, you’re not just buying a vehicle—you’re committing $80,000 to $100,000 of your money to something that’s going down in value. And during that same time, life doesn’t stand still.

Relationships happen. Marriage, kids, maybe a home. Now that truck is just one piece of a much heavier financial picture, and by year three or four, many people are already tired of the cost but still stuck in the loan. And statistically most marriages end in divorce as well.

This is where critical thinking matters. Instead of asking, “Can I afford the payment?” ask, “What is this costing my future?” Because every dollar you spend in one direction is a dollar you’re not using somewhere else. If you took that same $500 to $800 a month and invested it instead, you could end up with roughly $45,000 to $85,000 over that same six or seven year period. That’s not money spent—that’s money built.

The difference is simple: you can spend $80,000 and it’s gone, or you can build $80,000 and it’s yours.

You don’t have to be great at reading or math, but you better be good at forecasting your future.

And when you’re at a crossroads, don’t be afraid to bring someone else into the conversation—someone with experience who can help you see further down the road. The choices you make don’t own you, but their effects are very real. They can either hold you back or move you forward. The key is learning to think ahead—because your future is being shaped by the decisions you make today.

Think beyond the payment

  • Consider the timeline of your life
  • Understand opportunity cost
  • Use critical thinking
  • Seek perspective when needed

Critical thinking today shapes the life you live tomorrow. That’s reusable across everything:

  • Cars
  • Credit cards
  • Housing
  • Jewelry
  • Even relationships and career decisions

When you apply critical thinking to your decisions, you don’t just spend money—you shape your future. Its the difference between spending money and building a life.
